York Air Conditioning And Heating

I am a science teacher. Where should I try to get a job? New York (Not NYC), PA, Vermont, NH or ME?
I am not certified in these states yet, but which offers a combination of best pay, working conditions, great students, reasonably priced homes, low crime, gorgeous scenery…etc? I really dislike big urban areas but adore charming villages and small towns within an hour or two, maybe, of a larger city. I love teaching and have been an award-winning HS/MS biolgy/gen sci teacher in Texas far too long, and dream of escaping the heat and crime and filth and rednecks. I cringe at the thought of taking entry-level skills tests after 20 great years in the classroom, but I suppose I have no choice but to jump through the hoops! I want cool, fresh air and forests and perhaps mountains and real autumn. Tell me about where YOU live and teach! Are parents supportive? Are you well-compensated? Is life lovely where you live? How do you become certified? Are there lots of jobs for science teachers? What are the best districts Please let me know how you like your life!!! Thanks!!
I teach high school math in Utah, but was originally certified in NY, and my brother-in-law teaches physics in NY.
My rankings would be:
1) NY because the cost of living is good for the pay (and I am biased because I am from there). Plus, it is centrally located, and easy to locate within reach of a fairly large city. Drawback is NY is very test-oriented at all grade levels.
2) NH – quaint, small towns, supportive on education.
3) PA – ditto, more blue-collar types of kids I think.
4) ME – ditto, except more isolated from America…maybe not a bad thing.
5) VT – very weak teachers union, but like NH, quaint.
Sorry, I can’t give more details, but I love the NE as well. I miss the sprawling green countryside. I bet NY, PA or NH would be the closest comparison to where you are coming from. Good luck in your search for utopia!
